Modernist art has faced controversy since it was born. Lukacs had opposed tomodernism art, while Frankfurt school actively defending modernist art. The defense formodernism art formed unique modernism literary theory, and constituted an importantpart of The Frankfurt school’s critical aesthetic. This paper mainly discusses theformation, the main contents,and theoretical value of the Frankfurt school’s modernistliterature theory,The first part talks about the background of Frankfurt school’s modernism art theory.Western marxists refused violence revolution and chose the way of ideology critics, andit’s the social and historical reasons of Frankfurt school’s modernist literature and arttheory. Lukacs’s alienation and humanitarian thoughts directly affected the Frankfurtschool, but in the argument of realism, Frankfurt school and Lukacs departed, and theformer clearly tended to the art of modernism.In the second part, the author discusses the Frankfurt school’s mordernist literaturetheory from three aspects, and also reveals the three important characteristics of themodernist art. According to the Frankfurt school, modernism art revealed and criticizedthe reality, and symbolized the liberation of humanity. Lukacs accused the modernismwork for it’s against the creation principle of "generality", but Adorno defended theauthenticity of modernist art basis on the non-identity of reality. Secondly, theModernism art is "non-violent cooperation" with the false ideology. The affirmative artand mass culture are the conspirators of false ideology, only the Modernism art fightagainst the false ideology with its rejection and denial character. Finally, Modernism artis the liberation and salvation of humanity, and it’s the arrival of the Messiah. Benjaminbelieves, Modernism art focused on the person’s spirit, and the most fundamental condition of living, they are trying to "shock" the soul, to "recall" the memory, and showfreedom to the person’s imagination.This article also compared the modernism art theory of Frankfurt school withNietzsche, Heidegger’s poetics in the third part. From humanitarian, politicaltendentiousness and criticalness of Frankfurt school’s theory, we can see the great valueof Frankfurt school’s Modernist literature and art theory.
