Design of animation roles includes design of roles’outlook, action, personality and feeling. At first, a successful design of animation role should be done when the scenario is finished, characteristics of each role is mainly showed by design of its personality, which updates from conception to categorization and complication, finally becomes larger-scale design. In the performance of the overall image performance mode, portraying personality and designing special characteristics are the key of animation role’s design. Second, in the process of designing roles designers have to follow the rule of psychological reality, which designs animation roles under the premise of "assumptions" in animation art through methods such as exaggeration, distortion and personification based on each role’s psychological and personality features so that audiences can feel aesthetical joyfulness. The design of animation roles can be done in a form of Meaning", also actions of roles can be largely exaggerated humorously which can not be done in live performance and also the real fun and attraction of animation. In addition, audience may judge value of an animation role not only based on visual stimulation brought by the roles’design but more importantly based on self-identity gained through the role’s emotional changes that can be traced down to deep exploration of humanity, morality and social classes. When animation roles’design emotionally fits to audiences’experiences and logics, audiences will be surprised and moved by the emotional consonance and that’s how "classic" was born. Classic animation roles can be "read" repeatedly by audiences, as their value goes beyond limitation of race and times and corresponds to audiences’emotional needs. Above all, success of designing an animation role can not be accomplished by individuals, it requires designers keep discussing, exploring and updating the roles during the design process of from writing scenario to creating roles to designing each role’s characteristics. Besides, current situation imposes much stricter requirements on designers, so how to picture each role’s personal characteristics, action’s interestingness and emotional classics has become a topic every animation designers have to face. The thesis analyzes elements that contribute to making a successful role in animation and summarizes characteristics of animation art through discussing how the whole process from writing scenario to creating roles to designing roles to drawing animation can influence the formation of animation roles while considering animation roles’performance rules.
