On The Translation Of Static And Dynamic Descriptions In Chinese Classic Poetry

In the long and splendid history of China, Chinese classical poetry, as an ever-shining pearl, has always been admired by people all over the world. The Tang Dynasty, as one of the most prosperous dynasties in China, has cultivated numerous well-known poets with their elegant works. Therefore, how to translate Tang Poetry with their original beauty in static and dynamic descriptions so as to serve readers’aesthetic interest has become an important research topic.Guided by the Contextual Adaption, Structural Adaption and Dynamic Adaption from Verschueren Adaption Theory, this paper will explore the translation methods and strategies put forward by some famous translators, such as Xu Yuanchong.Adaption Theory is a key conception in Pragmatics put up by Verschueren, in whose theory the use of language is considered as a process of making choices. Variability, negotiability and adaptability are the three properties of the process. Therefore in the field of translation, a translator should think about the possibility of composing different versions to realize the cross-cultural communication. In other words, he should translate according to different translation methods with high flexibility to fulfill the aim of communication, and to enable the readers of target languages to fully understand the implicit meaning behind the work, as well as the author’s intention.In this thesis, the Tang poetry will be cited as examples to illustrate better translation methods while transferring static and dynamic beauty. Besides, analysis and comparison among different translation versions are used to certify that a translator has the duty to completely and perfectly display the special charm in the Tang poetry, so as to further promote cultural exchange.As for translation methods, a translator should try to meet the requirements in Adaption Theory, understand thoroughly the background for composing poems and the poems’implicit meanings, keep comparing the different structures and content of the poems between the source language and the target language, and then choose the ideal version to meet the readers’mental needs. Therefore, for the translation of static and dynamic descriptions in the Tang Poetry, we shouldn’t be confined to only one or several methods. Instead, we should keep trying and exploring until we have found a version which could serve and promote cultural exchange.With the analysis and comparison among different translation versions, this thesis attempts to prove that poetry is translatable. Besides, in promoting cultural exchange between different cultures, this thesis has proposed some feasible methods in translating Chinese classical poetry.
