Chang Ta-chun is one of the most influential writers in Taiwan, who has created a lot of outstanding works during his writing career over thirty years. In the last80s and90s, Chang fully experimented with various postmodern narrative techniques in his novels, challenging the popular realistic practice at that time in Taiwan. He has brought new horizons to the rising of Taiwanese literature while emphasizing the role of novels to criticize the real world. After the21st century, Chang shifted his focus to traditional Chinese narrative techniques of story-telling based on going against reality and valuing fiction. Readers could tell Chang’s intention to go back to the traditions of Chinese ancient novels from his novel genres and forms of expression.In this paper, narratologic theories and Chang Ta-chun’s own literary propositions were used to analyze and classify many of his novels created from last80s till now. Chang Ta-chun’s narrative skills demonstrated in the text itself were inquired in this paper through the means of literature review, comparison and synthesized analysis and under the guidance of related narrative theories. This paper is dedicated to finding out about the attributes, mixing and the combination of Western modern narrative techniques and Chinese traditional narrative aesthetics as well as the reason why his kind of narration comes into being.This paper is divided into five parts:the first chapter is the introduction, which generalizes this paper in three aspects i.e. research motives, present research studies and aims,at the same time, states the basic research attitudes and research purpose. In the second chapter, based on many of Chang Ta-chun’s novels created during last80s and90s, the paper requires into the origin and characteristics of Chang Ta-chun’s favorite modern and post-modern narrative modes. Moreover, it also talks about the creating purport conveyed through his novel text that expresses the sense of distrust between the reality and the truth. In the third chapter, based on series of novels created by Chang Ta-chun after the21st century, not only did he pay tribute to the traditional Chinese narrative style but he also combines and recreates it with modern narrative methods. In the fourth chapter, based on his long martial-arts novel Cheng Bang Bao Li Tuan which is a comprehensive expression of Chang Ta-chun’s narrative methods, close attention was paid to the transitions and conversions in between them. As a conclusion, the fifth chapter summaries the purport of each chapter and came to a systematic discussion.
