Research On Can-wish Verbs In Legal Register

This present thesis uses the theory of semantics and pattern grammar to discuss the distribution of the in the legal register, examines the differences of Can-wish Verbs in the legal register and novel register and focus on two types of frequently used structures of the legal written register:"Vcw+long prepositional structure+VP" and "Neg+Vcw+VP+de". This thesis also analysis the reasons of can-wish verb frequently used these two types of structure in the legal register with the theory of pattern grammar, to more comprehensive analysis of Can-wish verbs usage in the legal register. This paper is divided into six chapters:Chapter One do foreshadowing for this study, including research situation related to this topic, expatiates the purpose and significance, defines the research object, corpus sources of research and research methods.Chapter Two defined first the verb and the scope of this thesis, discussed grammar function of Can-wish verb, on the basis of these results counted the distribution of can-wish verbs in the legal register, and then from angles of can-wish verb modal semantics and the legal register itself characteristics emphatically analyzed two main reasons of the difference:One is why "ying dang" and "ke yi" frequently occuring in the legal register; Another is caused that different characters used different Can-wish verb in the court oral register.Chapter Three discussed the three main functions of Can-wish verbs in the legal register:First, Can-wish verbs can give power (right); Second, Can-wish verbs set obligations; Third, Can-wish verbs express the speech position.Chapter Four, first of all, the Can-wish verbs distribution of the legal written register and another kind of typical register (novel register) were compared:legal register Can-wish verbs are relatively less than novel register and state of distribution is not balanced; Then high frequency can verb in two kinds of register and frequently co-occur sentence patterns are also obviously different:legal register contains more than one prepositional structures in one sentence structure, and the negative form of the verb is far more than the novel register. Finally analyzes the causes of the differences from the perspective of register features in two kinds of register.Chapter Five focuses on analysis two common sentence patterns of the legal written: "Vcw+long prepositional structure+VP" structure and "Neg+Vcw+VP+de", and respectively according to the semantic relations of preposition structure and followed verbs and grammar role to classify two types of structure. Finally, by using relevant theories of pattern grammar analyze the reasons of the two types of structure frequently occur:two kinds of structure high frequency appear because in the legal register exists "co-selection" relationship between Can-wish verbs and structure.Chapter Six describes the conclusion, summarizes the content of this thesisand points out some disadvantages in this research.
