A Study On Translation Equivalence Of Chinese Legal Text Based On Register Theory

As a medium to facilitate the negotiation of business between Chinese and foreign enterprises,legal text features in rigor and standardization,and its accurate translation plays an important role for Chinese enterprises to go global.System on the Management of External Guarantees and Fund-Raising Measures of Shandong Iron& Steel Group Co.is the management system of Shandong Iron & Steel Company.It is mainly concerned with the guaranty system of company and the management of raising funds.After translating this legal text,the author has found some problems about the translation of legal text.With the help of register theory from linguistics,the author analyzes these problems to find some methods to solve the problems so as to put forward some strategies for achieving equivalence in translation.Then she applies the methods of analysis,comparison and test to prove the feasibility of these strategies.Register theory,put forward by linguist Halliday,includes three aspects: field,tenor and mode.He holds that the language in use changes with the context and is restricted by context to some extent.Language is produced in a certain context of discourse,and the role of linguistic context must be emphasized.Language is also closely related to the intention of the speaker.At the same time,the way of language expression also has an impact on the process of communication.Therefore,this theory can be used to carry out an in-depth analysis of legal text,and,by comparing the differences between English and Chinese in field,tenor and mode,help the author find a key to the solution of problems in translation.First,the thesis illustrates register theory and some translation problems relating to this theory.Second,the thesis analyses the feature of Chinese legal text and points out the difficulties in achieving equivalence in the process of translation.Finally,some strategies have been put forward to solve the problems.In terms of field equivalence,the formality,accuracy and simplicity of the target text are pursued.In terms of tenor equivalence,the functional equivalents are to be sought to improve the acceptability of the target language on condition that accurate translation isguaranteed.In terms of mode equivalence,the translator is supposed to keep the target text coherent and adopt the nominal expression that conforms to the written target language.Finally,the thesis summarizes the research and points out the way of further research,so as to provide some references for the practice and research of legal translation.
