City Hererotopia Image In Two Travel Notes Of Chateaubriand

Francois-Rene de Chateaubriand is considered one of the pioneers of French Romanticism in the19th century, he occupies an important position in the history of the development of French literature and influenced a whole generation of French romantic writers because of the exceptional charm of the literary creations, of which, his travel notes, with the unique perspective and delicate description, are well respected by the public.This paper aims to apply the concept of "heterotopia" proposed by Michel Foucault, and integrates the imagology of comparative literature and urban spatial theory in order to reseach Chateaubriand’s two travels:"Journey from Paris to Jerusalem","Journey to America". On the basis of reading the original texts, the author takes the heretopia city as the research object, analyzes the objective discription and subjective imagination about the image of American and oriental heterotipia cities, then explore the many-sided features of different heretopia cities so as to illustrate the source of Chateaubirand’s creation by the characteristics of heterotopia cities’images.The texte is divided into five parts. Introduction begins from chateaubriand’s reseache significance and the existing reseach situation, mainly concerns with the reseach directions and characteristics of domestic and foreign researches, then summarizes the research contents and methods. The frist chapter focuses on the theoretical basis, mainly about Heretopia in comparative litterature, Imagology and the theory of Urban Space. The second chapter observes the discription of Chateaubriand’s travel works, pointing out the narrative writing background, and analyses not only the relationship between the activity of travel and literary creation, but also the imagination of City Heretopia image. Through the image of city heretopia constructed in the travel writing "Journey to America", the third chapter dissects the concrete discription of obvious and dormant cities, therefore, this chapter contrasts the writer’s feeling with exotic reality. The fourth chapter explicates the oriental cities of Journey from Paris to Jerusalem", and pays attention to the writing related to oriental city in western literature, in addition, this part elaborates on the spirits of oriental city and oriental pagans. In the conclusion part, the author attempts to make further efforts to discuss the many-sided features of city heretopia image in the Chateaubriand’s writings and the reason for the portrayal.
