A new account of the tales of the world is the first book of anecdotes and character sketches written in classical Chinese. It was written in the southern Song period,by Liu Yiqing and other scholars. This book records some interesting stoties and talk of literati in Jin dynasty. It used proper words in simple language and dialect. It provides important data for study of middle period Chinese words, this paper focus on idiom in "a new account of the tales of the worls". In reference to predecessors based on research results, this paper adhere to combine with the idiom contents and forms. This paper studys the type of idioms. Idioms reveals ancient Chinese’s features, it also reflects social and cultural background.In the type of idioms, idioms can be classified according to their sense. Previous aiticle classify idioms under form. Allusions can be divided into the content of proposition and stories. Idioms can be divided into sentences and stories, too. The former is formed by quotation and ellipse. The latter is formed by synopsis.The cultural background of idioms is the point Ⅰ wish to emphasize. Moral, appearance, emotion and wisdom is evaluation criterion in Jin dynasty. It is the content of Wei-Jin demeanor, too. Morality is a reflection of Confucianism. Appear- ance, emotion and wisdom reflects the personality of people. It reflects man’s values achievement.
