This is a project report on translation of Chapter6the Teacher’s Work:Nurturing Character of Building Character in Schools. This project report includes four chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the background, objectives and significance of the translation project. Chapter two focuses on the analysis of the source text, the authors and the appreciation of the source text. Chapter three is about the difficulties and problems encountered in the translation process and the keys used to solve them. Chapter four is the conclusion concerning with the lessons drawn from the translation process and the experience gained from the process.This project report, starting from the communicating translation theory of Peter Newmark, explores the guiding effect of communicating translation on this kind of text to find the appropriate translation ways and methods. Besides, the translator has obtained experience and lessons through the process of translation of the original text. The experience mainly involves the deep understanding of the communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark and how to apply the theories into practice. The translator believes that texts should be translated in accordance with the theory of communicative translation theory of Peter Newmark if they belong to the text of information functionality defined by Peter Newmark. Because it mainly focuses on the transmission of the original meaning instead of rigidly adhering to the original language, and it emphasizes that the information should be transmitted in terms of the language, culture and pragmatic style in target language rather than try to translate a text word-for-word. The lessons learned include two parts. Part one, the work of translation is never as simple as it seems, because it involves the conversion of two languages which is related to different cultures, histories, religions and philosophies. Furthermore, the logic, coherence and rationality of the translation should be taken into account.Therefore, it is not true that the text without new words and difficult words is easy to be translated.For example, some people may translate the phrase of make light of into enlightening somebody. However, its real meaning is neglect in the text. Part two refers to the qualities that the translator should possess, mainly including a solid grounding in the language, broad knowledge as well as the responsibility. The translator is the bridge between the original author and the readers of the target language, so a good translation is inseparable from the quality of the translator. Good works need translator to equip themselves with solid grounding in the language. For instance, the good way to translate the words of talent and personality is to use idiom, otherwise the translation may lack a sense of spirituality and vividness. When facing with the difficulties in the process of translation, the translator wanted to skip them; Encountering difficult words or phrases (such as room mother),the translator wanted to neglect them under the condition of not affecting the main meaning of the article. However, the translator did not do that,because it is the most essential quality for a translator to translate an original text completely.
