Appreciation education respects the law of life,it is full of love,vitality and humanity.The aim of appreciation education is to pay attention to the students' strengths,discover students' good qualities and give them praise,and then gradually form a prairie fire.Sukhomlinskii(1981)proposes that the art of education is to bring out the strengths and potential of students so as to help them enjoy the pleasure of success in studying.He suggests teachers should treat every student with appreciation,and cultivate students' interests and confidence in learning.Similarly,Zhou Hong(2004)argues that children who are educated with appreciation education can get the fullest development of their potential,and they can fully experience the fun of success.At last,this kind of fun will be automatically turned into an infinite motivation for further study.Since 1990 s,researches on appreciation education have become popular in the field of education at home and abroad.And they have great theoretical value and practical significance to the better promotion of the development of quality education.There have been many researches on appreciation education in the past,but few are combined with specific subjects,especially for senior high school English teaching.Therefore,this paper aims to investigate and study students' and teachers' perceptions of appreciation education in English learning process in senior high school.Combining quantitative and qualitative methods,this study intends to find out(1)The general picture of senior high school English teachers' and students' perceptions of appreciation education.(2)The similarities and differences between English teachers' perceptions and students' perceptions of appreciation education.The participants involved in this study are 200 students and 35 English teachers from senior grade one in Anfu county,and 160 students' and 30 teachers' valid questionnaires are collected.Based on Sukhomlinskii'(1981)and Zhou Hong'(2004)theoretical framework of appreciation education,two questionnaires will be used to find out teachers' and students' perceptions of appreciation education.In addition,10 students and 5 teachers who have taken part in the questionnaire will be selected forinterview for further analysis of their perceptions of appreciation education.The collected data is analyzed by SPSS 24.The major findings of the present research are listed as the following:(1)As for the general picture of senior high school students' and teachers' perceptions of appreciation education in English teaching,the descriptive statistics of students' questionnaires and teachers' questionnaires show that both students and English teachers in senior high school have the awareness of appreciation education.However,teachers' perceptions of appreciation education are much stronger than students' perceptions.(2)With regard to the similarities and differences between students' perceptions and teachers' perceptions of appreciation education,the results show that there exists obvious statistical significance on the category of Respect,Understanding,Encouragement,Tolerance and Reminding except Trust.Most teachers argue that they should combine appreciation education with English teaching and often appreciate their students in the teaching process.But most students indicate that they cannot feel teachers' appreciation in the process of English learning.(3)In terms of the results of students' interviews and teachers' interviews,almost all the students believe that appreciation education is helpful to their English study.And they generally want to get appreciation from their teachers,they have high expectation on their teachers.However,although most teachers have realized the importance and necessity of applying appreciation education in English teaching in senior high school,some teachers still do not have a comprehensive understanding of appreciation education.Based on the above findings,some implications will be put forward for the application of appreciation education in English teaching in senior high school.In addition,the thesis also provides some suggestions for further studies of appreciation education in senior high school English teaching.
