The conversion between the parts of speech phenomenon widely exist in differentliterary form, so it plays a very important role in social life. For this, the overseas anddomestic scholars separately study the conversion between the parts of speech fromtraditional word-formation perspective and motivation level. These studies do have aguiding role in the conversion between the English parts of speech, but currently thestudy on the conversion between the English parts of speech at home and abroad mainlyfocuses on the essence of language phenomenon and the contrastive study betweenEnglish and Chinese. The complete and deep studies to define the conversion betweenthe English parts of speech and the study on the deep cognitive mechanism to itsformation are less. Therefore, the study on the conversion between the English parts ofspeech from the cognitive perspective is a supplement to the conversion between theEnglish parts of speech and at the same time this is also a development trend of theconversion between the English parts of speech. So far, among the relevant cognitive study, the scholars have used metaphor andmetonymy theory in the cognitive linguistic field to study the conversion between theEnglish parts of speech from the cognitive mechanism perspective. Based on theprevious studies, this paper will take the idea of the combination of the qualitativeanalysis, theory and practice to give a systematic interpretation to the conversionbetween nouns and verbs among the conversion between the English parts of speechfrom the categorization theory, decategorization theory, construal operations andconstruction and so on in the cognitive linguistics field. This paper is divided into six chapters:The first chapter mainly introduces the research background, research purpose, research significance, research methods and the innovation points of this research. The second chapter is the literature review, which presents a brief introduction tothe research status, evolution, achievements, and problems of the conversion betweenthe parts of speech and the conversion between nouns and verbs at home and abroad. The third chapter is the theoretical principle part, which mainly discusses the definition of the conversion between the parts of speech, main types of the conversionbetween the parts of speech in current English, the conversion between the parts ofspeech within cognitive linguistics. At the same time, it presents the basic concept ofanalyzing the conversion between the parts of speech in the cognitive linguistics. The fourth chapter and fifth chapter are the main part of the paper and these arealso the innovation point of this paper. The fourth chapter, it first summarizes the prototypical features of the nouns andverbs. The main attributes of the nouns are that they indicate the concrete entities andhave the singular, plural form and the pre-modifier components. The main attributes ofthe verbs are that they can fully reflect the various grammatical features like person, tense, aspect, modality and voice and so on. Then, the paper discusses the oppositionand similarity of the nouns and verbs at the prototype level. Based on the similarity, thepaper sets up a simple noun/verb annular continuum to give an explanation that thenouns and verbs in this continuum is end-to-end, which is the first motivation forexplaining why the conversion between nouns and verbs occur. At the same time,Chapter4also studies the conversion between nouns and verbs from thedecategorization perspective. During this conversion process, the nouns and verbsrealize the change of the attribute. The fifth Chapter, it first gives the classification of the conversion between nounsand verbs, and then the paper puts forward the cognitive mechanism of the conversionbetween nouns and verbs to analyze the linguistic phenomenon of the conversionbetween nouns and verbs. The research is proved that the noun-to-verb conversionexperiences a process of increase of the profiling content, the figure and the changefrom the summary scanning to the sequential scanning, profiling the entities to theprocess; and the verb–to-noun conversion experiences the change from the profiling theentities to the process. From the semantic perspective, the conversion between nounsand verbs profile the different parts of the basic concept content in differentconstructions. Meanwhile, the paper deems that mutually containing between nouns andverbs theory provides a common semantic foundation for the conversion between nounsand verbs, which is the second motivation for why the conversion between nouns andverbs occur.Chapter six mainly introduces the achievements and limitations of the research. The study deems that the cognitive mechanism approach to the conversion betweenthe English parts of speech will have certain promoting role in the future vocabularyteaching and English learning.
