As a closed and complex category category, Compound directional verbs havespecial syntactic structures and semantic functions, and they are the emphasises anddifficulties in linguistic studies. Two compound directional verbs have symmetric orasymmetric relation in semantic while they are symmetric in syntactic. In this paper wefirstly describe these asymmetric phenomena in detail, and then explain them includingsyntactic and semantic from a cognitive perspective. This paper includes three parts: theintroduction, the main part, and the conclusion. The first part is the introduction. It mainly expounds the research object andextent, the status quo, significance, the research method and the corpus source. The mainpart includes the one to the third chapter. The first chapter is for the discussion ofsyntactic analysis between the two corresponding compound directional verbs."asymmetry" and "symmetry"are cognitive concepts, compound directional verbs includesplit and combinations that are asymmetric as well as the two combinations.Because ofdifferences in cognitive styles that are restricted by iconicity. The second chapter is forthe discussion of semantic analysis between the two corresponding compound directionalverbs.According to grammaticalization process of compound directional verbs, Semantictypes of compound directional verbs was categorized the objective space displacementmeaing, the subjective space displacement meaing, the time meaing and the results meaingbased on researches before in this paper. Then the six groups of compound directionalverbs are discussed respectively phenomena on the asymmetry and symmetry insemantic,as well as "qilai"and"qiqu"that are controversial. The third chapter analysisreasons on asymmetry of compound directional verbs from a cognitive perspective basedon specific description and cognitive linguistics theories, such as the image schema theory, the metaphor, the salience theory and the subjectivisation. We believe that the semanticevolution and asymmetric of compound directional verbs generated with abstractionand subjective.the various components of displacement have different prominents asexperiences about displacement from the spatial domain project into thinking domain, andmeaings of failing to prominent would fade because of different people’s psychological subjective tendency. The third part is a supplementary, pointing out deficiencies and thedirection of further research. This paper combines objectivity of language with the subjectivity of people’sthinking based on the description and a full explanation to explore the compounddirectional verbs′features of semantic and syntactic.
