Translation And Cultural Identity Studies In Post-colonial Context Through1587, A Year Of No Significance

In the light of Postcolonial Translation Theory, this thesis probes into the relation between translation and cultural identity with the examples from1587, A Year of No Significance:The Ming Dynasty in Decline written by Ray Huang, aiming to reveal the impacts of the cultural identity positioning on translating and effects of text translation on Chinese cultural identity.Through the analyses of Ray Huang’s cultural identity consciousness and the translation strategies in his1587, A Year of No Significance:The Ming Dynasty in Decline, the thesis demonstrates that when experiencing Western countries’ culture hegemony, Ray Huang, as a cultural mediator standing for his own nation, took responsibility to break the culture hegemony and promote the communication between China and western countries. In the process of writing and translating, Ray Huang highlighted Chinese cultural identity and enhanced cultural communication by making use of the foreignization strategy to translate Chinese specific culture elements. This study will be of certain significance to help with understanding the relationship between translation and cultural identity and providing guidance to the translation of Chinese specific culture elements.
