Since globalization's breaking the boundary of regions, the links between different countries and culture have become closer and tighter, with the further progress of globalization, culture is increasingly playing a crucial role in human communication. In this process, the infiltration of Western civilization which obscures the boundaries of culture and has largely affected traditional Chinese culture. This thesis uses the film“Xiao Wu” directed by Jia Zhangke as a case. From the perspective of post-colonial cultural identity,it is aimed to explore and analyze the changes of China's local cultural environment and the problem of cultural identity in the era of globalization. The place where the story in the film that happens,Fenyang County,is a complex cultural area which is mixed with the culture of local/global,modern/traditional,Chinese/Western.In this place,Xiaowu's traditional way of lives and values are constantly under attack by foreign culture. After being abandoned by friendship, love and domestic affection in succession,Xiaowu starts to doubt his traditional cultural value and become confused, anxious and lost.Post-colonial cultural identity theory assumed that identity is changeable, which means it is in a constant state of negotiation and construction which happens in a cultural in-between space.Through the perspective of post-colonial cultural identity,we see that Xiaowu is renegotiating and reconstructing his cultural identity in this mixed cultural environment where various cultures, values, ideologies and ways of life are competing persistently.
