Light is the premise that we perceive the world, meanwhile that resulted in the color and volume. Light nearly the most important painting language. The performance of light and shadow led to western painting demonstrate its brilliance within the world’s art treasures. On the other side, the innovation and development of Chinese painting for thousands of years formed real Chinese painting of sophisticated appeal. Real Chinese painting is a perfect integration of those special effects with ink on the rice paper and traditional Chinese culture. As the saying is that painters should take the nature as teacher, moreover coupled with inner perception to produce excellent works. The saying completely clarified the characteristics of Chinese painting. Since continuously, painters for the pursuit of artistic conception is far greater than the objective existence. Therefore, realistic effects of light and shadow were relatively rare in the traditional Chinese painting. That result in the performance of light and shadow has been identified the characteristic of the western painting, some person even believe that was not suitable for rice paper. There is no doubt that artistic conception is the soul of Chinese painting. However, the light and shadow are not only belonging to the western painting. This article through analysis several Chinese paintings to prove Chinese painters paid attention to the light and shadow with different technique of expression as well. Along with the development the era, Chinese painting began to accept the culture shock and no longer refused change. Chinese painting is entering to the period of transformation from traditional to modern. Furthermore, Chinese painters are paying more attention to the performance of light that already had outstanding achievements. More and more Chinese painters try to use traditional ink and pen to express ’light and shadow’. This paper described the development of’light and shadow’ within Chinese painting, chose some examples to explain that how to express the light concept with traditional technique. The target is that try to find out the way of Chinese painting development.
