Courtly Love which was generated from Medieval Western Europe, was firstappeared and spread in the area of French rich land–Provence. The concept of love whichis called Courtly Love generally is mainly focus on the relationship between knights andnoblewomen. This kind of concept of love is influenced by Christian ideas deeply. It isexpressed as knights to noblewomen’s repressed fantasy love. Inspired noblewomen’sadmiration is knights’ lifelong pursuit of noblewomen. In order to come up to the standardof noblewomen’s appreciation, they enhanced and improved their own steadily. As arepresentative of knights, Tristan did not rigidly adhere to traditional Courtly Love. Hedared to break through the religious abstinence ideological restraints, to overstep the feudalhierarchy, to fight for the freedom of love and autonomy of marriage.The thesis unfolds from three parts: Introduction, Subject and Conclusion. Theorganization as follows:The Introduction part mainly introduces the research status of traditional conceptof Courtly Love domestic and abroad, and illustrates the research perspective byTristan who was a typical representative of knights.The Subject has two parts. The first part of Subject is split up into three parts:background, generations and characteristics of traditional Courtly Love. These ones willpave the way for the later description of unique part of Tristan’s concept of Courtly Love.The Second part of Subject analyses the differences between the concept of Courtly Loveand the concept of traditional Love by Tristan’s growing experience and the description oflove talk between him and Isolde through knight legend of literature–Tristan and Isolde,The Death of King Arthur. The third part of Subject gets the unique value from thecomparation of Tristan’s concept of love and traditional concept of Courtly Love byanalyzing and researching the figure of Tristan in the literature.The Conclusion summarize the thesis and states the value of Tristan’s concept ofCourtly Love. That is to break the tie of abstinence, break the limits of feudal regimeabout social rank and marriage, highlight the personal sense, and conform to thehistorical trend. It laid a good foundation for the development of the thoughts of“People Oriented”.
