Character words are the words used to describe the human character and intrinsicpersonality, which contain people’s rich thoughts and feelings and are endowed withgreat evaluation. Like the meanings of other parts of speech, character words’evaluation and emotional meanings that possess distinguishing social attribute are alsoestablished by usage. The research finds that as one of means for languagecommunication, character words play an important role in people’s communication.Their emotional meaning can well reflect emotion consciousness of both sides ofcommunication. Therefore, the research on study character words is of greatsignificance to the promotion of exchange ideas, the establishment of harmoniousinterpersonal relationship and the formation of a good social atmosphere. On basis ofabsorbing research results of eminent scholars, this paper which is applied severaltheories to analyze and prove, expounds character words’ emotional meanings andcultural implication in comprehensive and systematical way.This paper is divided into four parts, except the conclusion part. The introductionpart mainly introduces the research object, the selected topic basis, the research status,the research significance, the theory perspective, the research content, the researchmethod and data source. The first chapter gives a definition to character words andanalyzes their features. The emotional meanings are divided into six parts--respect,praise, favorite, reprimand, hatred and despising by applying the classified statisticalmethods and appraisal theory. The research finds character words have sociality,symmetry, stability, variability, subjectivity, evaluation, matching, and so on. It has736character words which proportion is praise, reprimand, hatred, favorite, despisingand respect in turn. The second chapter mainly analyzes character words’ transferphenomena and basic reasons, and makes a deep analysis of them in particular context.The research finds character words’ emotional meanings have the phenomena oftransfer, expansion, shrink, strengthening, weakening, and development from nothingand from meaning to nothing; they have the phenomena of normality, shift andabnormality in context; the reasons of their changes have internal cause and externalcause. The third chapter analyzes the cultural implication of character words. It is adeeply theoretical inquiry. We can not only understand Chinese traditional philosophy thoughts which we faithfully obey, but also realize ethic ideas and life values ofChinese nationality from the above analysis.The innovation of this paper is as follows: First, this paper classifies andanalyzes the character words in accordance with the affective meaning’s emotionintensity of appraisal theory, which enriches the theory of the character words’emotional meaning. Second, it analyzes the transfer phenomena of character words’with the theory of semantic change, which is less mentioned before. Third, fromlanguage cultural perspective, it associates character words and their emotionalmeanings with national and philosophical thoughts, ethic ideas and life values ofChinese nationality to have a discussion. This is also an entirely new content. Theresearch results have certain reference value for modern Chinese lexicology,semantics, and sociolinguistics, and so on.
