The God of Small Things, written by Arundhati Roy, published in1997, hasattracted scholars attention in Indian and Western theoretical world for its distinctivenarrative strategy and language style. This paper will make a futher expatiation onThe God of Small Things from the point of view of traumatic narrative.The papermainly discusses the traumatic nature, traumatic theme, traumatic image andtraumatic symptoms of The God of Small Things. It consist of five parts asfollowing:The first part is the introduction. This part analysis the research background, theresearch vaule of The God of Small Things, then presents the traumatic narrationtheory and the reasons for selecting this subject.Chapter one states the traumatic motivation of The God of Small Things. Themotivation can be divided into two levels: firstly, the psychological trauma Roysuffered from family and society when he was a child; secondly, the strong politicalresponsibilities that Roy possessed as a public intellectual.Chapter two analysis the traumatic theme of The God of Small Things. Itconcludes three levels: the family trauma that children and women suffered, thenational trauma that elite class suffered, the case trauma that untouchable classsuffered.Chapter three illustrates the multiple traumatic images of The God of SmallThings. There have two categories: the supernatural images and the images ofconsumer goods that represent the consumer codes. Those repetitive appearancedifferent degrees of the trauma of the characters in this novel.Chapter four analysis the traumatic symptoms of The God of Small Things. theywere represented in its language style and structural characteristics.By adopting the"hybrid strategy" and disnarrated strategy of the post-colonialism theory, thenon-linear narrative theory, Roy skillfully makes some changes in the phrases, sentences and structures in order to make the characters’ psychological traumastanding out and add tragic atmosphere to the text..
