As a "writer and activist",Arundhati Roy not only criticizes various social proble ms in India,but also shows the social responsibility as a politician.At the same time,we can also see her reflection and profound action on the problems of the common people in India.My paper studies on Roy's novels,The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness from the view of subaltern.It consists of five parts as following:The introduction discusses common subaltern phenomenon in India and Roy's novels that focuse on that problem,this paper expounds the thought of the subalt ern school and its development,and summarizes domestic and foreign research ofRoy's novels and topic selection.The first chapter analyzes four kinds of identity of common people in Roy's novels from three aspects.They are caste dimension,gender dimension and class dime nsion,namely untouchable,female,hijra and poor group.The second chapter analyzes the rights of the ordinary people.Throughout the Indian history,the subaltern mainly experienced three kinds of authoritative symbol: the "internal colonization" in the colonial empire,the oppression of the local elites and the new "external colonization" in the post-colonial period.The third chapter focuses on the subjectivity of subaltern.In the history dominated by the elite,the common people are faced with the problem of lack of subjectivity.In the novels,Roy endowed the subjectivity of the common people by constructing the irsubjectivity consciousness.At the same time,she also shaped two kinds of awakening images.The fourth chapter briefly analyzes the artistic characteristics how Roy wrote the common people.Novel is an art that unifies in content and form.Roy writes two unique subaltern stories by realistic,psychological time,heterogeneity and fragmented writing.
