With the expansive and frequent communication between China and othercountries in the world, the publicity materials have become an important and influentialway to promote China, show up China and let foreigners get well known about China.Therefore, the translation of publicity materials plays an important role in the process ofpublication. The translation quality of publicity materials impacts the communicativeeffect directly. And a good quality publicity material can help to let the whole worldunderstand China well, promote China to involve in world activities and show thedeveloping of China to the foreigners abroad. According to different publicity aims, thepublicity materials have their certain type features separately which involve the foreignreaders who don’t know about China. The first task of publicity materials is to make theforeign readers understand the condition of China’s various aspects really andobjectively. Moreover, it is important to reach a better communicative effect and boostthe comprehension and cooperation between each other.Recently, many scholars have set out the research of publicity materials, and putforward their opinions about the operation process and technical problems. In this thesis,the author will talk about how to translate publicity materials from the view of semantictranslation and communicative translation, in order to transform the informationcorrectly and try to keep the writing features and culture features of the original texts.The translation of publicity materials needs to be accurate, nature and standard.Meanwhile, the translators will try their best to overcome the language obstruction andcultural obstruction. Therefore, on the question of adopting semantic translation andcommunicative translation, the author considers that translators should apply flexibletranslation strategies and hold the whole translation effect according to the varied textfeatures. In practical translation, translators can express the original meaning correctlyby the translation method of communicative translation, and keep the original languagefeatures and cultural features in the instruction of semantic translation.Shanghai Expo is regarded as an international cultural communicative event, whichattaches much attention. The medium and publicity materials are the first door forpeople to know about Shanghai Expo. Meanwhile, the publicity materials play an important role among the foreign visitors. Therefore, the translators of publicitymaterials undertake heavy responsibilities. If the information cannot be conveyed toothers correctly, the works of publicity materials will become in vain.There are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter One is the introduction of publicitymaterials of Shanghai Expo. Chapter Two is a review of semantic translation andcommunicative translation. And Chapter Three and Four are the theory innovation partswhich include the translation and exploratory principles of C-E translation of publicitymaterials of Shanghai Expo. The translation method of semantic translation andcommunicative translation concerns the broad differences of varied texts and adoptsdifferent translation strategies as well as the theoretical guiding principles according todifferent translation texts and culture background. All of this above plays a supportiveand theoretical role in the analysis of publicity materials of Shanghai Expo.
