John Williams—one of the most memorable and prolific composers—is quietfamous for his various music styles. The interpretation of this movie composer JohnWilliams perhaps starts from the Star Wars saga. Owing to the composition of the StarWar, Williams established his position in the first-class composer in Hollywood. Fromthe first episode of the Star Wars saga in1977to the last one, namely the Star Warsprequel trilogy, the film has changed a lot in setting, clothing, weapons, and evencinematograph and computer technology, but has never changed the theme musiccomposed by Williams as well as the dreams for the future. All the episodes begin withEnglish commentary and then the lens turn to the endless dark universe.Williams’ music tunes are strong and powerful, depicting the interplanetaryexploration road. Since the release of the movie soundtrack of the Star War, hiscompositions have been rated as one of the best selling symphonic music in the musicindustry. Listening to Williams’ music is like to watch the film, as if the film shots werein front of our eyes vividly. As a result, Williams not only is popular with the fans, butalso find favor in the eyes of Award and Grammy prize. Through the study of theWilliams film music, combined with the Star Wars saga, this thesis analyzes the featuresand functions of the audio-visual counterpoint. There are five characteristics: thememusic reveals the film theme; theme music deforms in a reasonable way; flexible use ofwhite space techniques; theme music and picture relevance; sense of distance anddistinctive hierarchy.The style of the Star War’s theme song is warm and lively, showing Williams’unique musical tone. According to this characteristic, the thesis summarizes the role ofWilliams’ film music plays in the audio-visual counterpoint: the plot of the film andmetaphor; the sublimation of film themes and emotions; theme music highlights thetheme image; the unity of the artistic style. After analyzing the characteristics of thefilm music of Williams, through which the thesis draws out Williams’ creative concepts.In other words, the reason for his music theme is bright and flexible, and most importantis his inspiration from the movie itself, making Williams outstanding in the field of theaudio-visual counterpoint.
