Studies On Aesthetic Characteristics For Mono-Etching

Two characteristics of "indirection" and "plurality" are standards in etching circle to define whether a piece of work is an etching. Indirection refers to picture obtained from indirect printing, but not direct work of painting. Plurality refers to that work needs to own repeatability, it cannot be only one piece of work and it must appear exactly alike work. These standards cause that breakthrough work has not appeared in field of etching creation for a long period of time. Etching is printed picture after handling by artist with methods including carving or etching, etc on layout of wood, stone, hemp gum, copper and zinc, etc with knife or chemical medicine, etc, painting is done fully around substrate made by etching painter during entire process. While mono-etching is a kind of painting or color wash on layout and a kind of mode using material to monotype finished product. Because it can be only printed for one time and cannot be printed repeatedly, work only appears one piece, it cannot be repeated, so it is called mono-etching. Mono-etching belongs to etching in a certain sense. Because mono-etching also adopts indirect painting mode, it is work printed after artist draws it or work obtained by methods including assemblage, etc, so mono-etching shall belong to a type of plate in etching.This dissertation is mainly to introduce artistry of mono-etching to everyone, let people understand it and understand this type of plate which has been developed on edge but is developing and growing. Selection of subject for dissertation originates from writer’s experimental creation from daily learning. Through usual accumulation of creations, I deeply understand artistic charm of mono-etching. Analyze, hackle and summarize from selection of creation subject to overview of development for ancient etching artistic history and artistic characteristics and features for western and eastern mono-etching for learning and quotation. Combine my own lab notes in experimental creations and elaboration for analysis of creation practices, this text mainly takes artistic effect represented by creation of mono-etching and its peculiar aesthetic characteristics as object of studies, expound artistic characteristics of mono-etching through comparison of mono-etching and traditional etching and comparison of western and eastern mono-etchings and further represent aesthetic characteristics of mono-etching through analysis and elaboration for author’s own created work. Mono-etching owns peculiar flexibility, contingency and randomness on artistic creation and it cannot restrict artist’s thinking and creative passion when he/she is creating, so mono-etchings can get more loves when they are created by artists. Therefore, mono-etching will eventually be known to every household and become a type of plate which is liked by everybody and accepted by the society.
