Characteristics & Artistry Of Mono-etching

Printmaking is a kind of painting based on wood. “Indirectness” and “plurality’ are the standard of judging whether a piece of work is printmaking. “Indirectness” is mainly shown in the creation methods of modern printmaking; the painting is indirectly conducted through printing on wood, stone and other substrates, rather than by directly hand-painting. “Plurality’ mainly is reflected in the replication of printmaking, which is also its early function. However, with the progress of the society development, printmaking also experiences two stages from a mere replication to artistic creation; then there are some different printmaking techniques from the traditional one and mono-etching is one of them.The paper aims to introduce the unique artistic characteristics of mono-etching printmaking, know the special kinds of printmaking rising due to the rapid development of printmaking and understand its unique charm. Because the author has been studying illustration during undergraduate course, the special direct printmaking kind with lithographic plate as the carrier caused the author’s strong interest. The paper mainly studies the art effect of mono-etching printmaking creation and its unique aesthetic characteristics, sums them through the study and research of the development course of Chinese and foreign mono-etching printmaking, compares the characteristics and artistry of the traditional printmaking and mono-etching printmaking, combines with the author’s creation feeling and practice experience, and illustrates the unique artistic expression and aesthetic characteristics of mono-etching printmaking. Mono-etching printmaking shows unique flexibility, contingency and randomness in the artistic creation, so they are popular among many artists. It is believed that it will ultimately become a popular, socially acceptable and household printmaking kind.
