Comprehensive survey of the research orientation on Chinese music history has drawn a quite clear venation about it with abundant historical materials in many comprehensive history, dynastic history and some topical history researches, while so far as to the different music styles in different regions, sorry to say, there has no been a good summary on why they have been so. As is well-known, in different regions, different national music grows up in the given social environments, in which multitudinous factors such as geography, culture, religion, belief, custom and art are included. As a result, we would not interpretate some music phenomenon without local music history which is a new area of music research and is a developing research subject. It will be of great importance because it will seek for its source and cause of formation as well its local features color regions.Shanxi local musical history is one branch of the local history researches. With its rich musical data and history remains, its research is of great advantage, having a very good condition to write out a good local music history. Shanxi province, as a great district of very rich cultural relics, its well-developed musical culture rooted in the booming Jin culture of the pre-Qin Period, of which, the Jin culture took an advanced position in the Spring and Autumn Period to the Warring State Period. The research of Jin music is a study closely connected with the Chinese musical root and resources.This paper is a little special topic of the new-planned Shanxi local music research, divided into4chapters:the first chapter introduces the social environment of the development of Jin music culture from the Spring and Autumn Period to the Warring State Period, esp. the general situation of the Jin culture; The second chapter gets the developing course of the Jin music culture sorted out proceeding with literatures and history materials as well as archaeological data; The third chapter make research by stages according to the formal two chapters; and the last chapter, the most important chapter, is a summary of Jin music culture characteristics and its inherit course.To write out a good Shanxi local music history not only explained the style and features of Shanxi musical development but also explored the value of this non-material culture heritage.
