The Adaptation In C-E Translation

Shanxi folk culture covers various fields and abundant contents, including folk literature, folk music, folk dance, etc., which embody a strong geographical color and profound cultural heritage. As an important part of Shanxi folk culture, Shanxi folk literature reflects the historical development and aesthetic values of Shanxi, which also serves as a mirror of traditional Chinese culture. However, it’s difficult to find English translation of Shanxi folk literature, and how to render various cultural elements in folk literature, like historical background, cultural color and geographical features, also needs further investigations. Therefore, guided by Prof. Gao Jian’s Language Character Theory, this report will take the translation practice of Shanxi folk literature as the object of study and delve into the adaptation of language in C-E translation of folk literature.The report includes four parts:Chapter1Task Description, Chapter2Task Procedure, Chapter3Case Study and Chapter4Summary. The report proposes that the folk literature usually possesses such textual features as cultural property, fuzziness and visualization. Considering these features, adaptation can be adopted in translating folk literature on the levels of words, sentences and texts. On the one hand, these strategies can preserve the cultural color of the original texts as much as possible. On the other hand, the acceptability of translated versions is also enhanced for target readers. By using such strategies, the translated version may be more readable and achieve the primary functions of original texts.
