As a special category of simultaneous interpreting, the text-based interpreting holds an important feature that the interpreter can depend on the original text, translated text or other materials to do the job. Many people believe that, with text at hand, interpreter will find simultaneous interpreting to be more convenient and much easier. However, such kind of understanding is quite biased and partial.By making literature review, case analyses and translation comparisons, this paper studies the challenges and difficulties of text-based interpreting, based on the writer’s field practice and previous research outcomes on this topic. It is found that due to the language feature of written text, the speaker’s way of speech delivery and the interpreter’s own effort mode, problems including mistaken interpreting, missed interpreting, wrong anticipation, fillers and hesitations are bound to pop up during the real work scenario. Therefore, it would be the interpreter’s duty to accumulate more knowledge and do more sight interpreting practice during daily study, to make targeted preparations before real work, and to apply related strategies during the interpreting. The paper is aimed at studying the field experience to point out directions for the author’s future development, also, to put forward some practical suggestions for other students of interpreting, and as well, to contribute the author’s bite of effort to the research of text-based interpreting.
