Giacomo Puccini, a representative of Italian verism composer in late19’s and early20’s century,Puccini is featured by his creative opinion of displaying and recreating ordinary people in ordinary lives. He has zealous in depicting the low lives at the bottom of the society. In his operas, women are always played in a very important position. Out of the total twelve operas he had written seven were named the names of their heroines, not to mention the numerous unforgettable women images created from under his pen. Since the glamour of opera is mainly embodied in the specific images it has created, this thesis tries to probe the techniques and features Puccini employed in his creations of women’s images through the comparative analysis of the representative character of the Magda of the play<La Rondine>, from both theatrical and musical points of views.The contents are as follows:In Chapter one, Verism and the generation of Puccini’s opera<La Rondine>, the author elaborates Puccini’s verism in opera creation, and introduces how difficult to produce the opera<La Rondine>.In Chapter two, The analysis of Magda’s image. The author,on the basis of the play book, make a specific image analysis of Magda, comparing analysis of the three representative characters, namely MiMi, Tosca and Madam Butterfly, pointing out their similarities、differences, and humanity reflected in Puccini’s thoughts.In Chapter three, The analysis of singing<La Rondine>. This aria will make a horizontal of Magda’s musical image, studying the shaping and depicting of Magda in music, analyzing comparatively the musical and singing styles in her arias. Analysis of a singer how to interpretation a character, making the shaping and creating of the image, analyzing the drama of character’s shape and grasp.From the musical and dramatically point of view, this thesis providing us an opportunity to better appreciate the various aspects of Puccini’s works from different perspectives, bettering our understanding of main characters, thus enable us, the aria singers, to present, to mode them more perfectly in real performance.
