Guchui music, an important genre in the history of Chinese ancient music, hasbeen well studied and documented since ancient time. Currently, researches regardingguchui music mostly focus on the history of ancient music in historical perspective.Most of them were regarding guchui music in Han and Wei dynasties while limitedresearch underlying Tang Dynasty guchui music was available, especially on itshistorical status. Therefore, present study endeavored to elucidate the evolution ofguchui music, thereby providing a better understanding of the crucial role of TangDynasty guchui music in Chinese ancient guchui music.In a thousand of years from the Western Zhou Dynasty to the Yuan dynasties,guchui music was in the rising period. The present study attempts to distinguish eachphase in the development of guchui musicvia analyzing the evolution of Chinese ancient guchui music, therefore establish TangDynasty as the prosperous period of Chinese ancient guchui music. Meanwhile, theguichui music of Tang Dynasty was also proved to be the peak of Chinese ancientguchui music through the longitudinal comparison of the growth of Chinese ancientguchi music, regardless of the classification and historical status. Compared to theguchui music in Han and Song Dynasties, Tang dynasty guchui music displayed morereasonable classification, more complete system, and more prominent positionfeatures etc. Taken together, the prosperity phase of Chinese ancient guchui musicwas in Tang Dynasty.
