The first two volumes of “1Q84” take chapter48of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier asa reference for structure method, while the religious spirit shown in Bach’s music does notconflict to the theme of the novel. In Japan, a country in the process of highly developingpost-industry, new social ethics which are marked by “ego” are gradually building up andbecoming the main stream. The coexistence of the inheritance and betrayal of traditionalmorality, the alienation among people, the desperation of life and the like are all includedin the modern social ethics, in which the spiritual crisis of Japanese deeply hides.Murakami just keenly feels this, and his view of “humanity” and model of his novel areshown in “1Q84”.Aomame and Tengo are the two leading characters in1Q84.The construction of theimage of Aomame is not to create a murder, but to describe the special fate of a modernfemale, especially the social reasons of the special fate. In portraying the image of Tengo, the writer adds explicit changes to his attitudes towards his father, which shows thatMurakami adds his missing of his own father into the writing. The understanding of hisown father filled the vacancy of family factors in Murakami’s works, which makes hisworks more well-rounded.The image of Aomame and the image of Tengo are commented in the tinge of socialethics. They cannot be just distinguished from good or a bad, which shows the specialty ofmodern literature. While the image of Ushikawa, which suddenly become important inVolume3, is the witness of the evil world going and returning in following a circle. It is anecessary character to show the morbid groups of people and the spiritual crisis ofJapanese modern society. The image of a sophisticate makes Komatsu a very special existence in HarukiMurakami’s work. To make this image a leading character shows the author’s deepthinking about social crisis. We can conclude the image of Ushikawa is the production ofthe bad effect and long-term influence of persecution from society. And other charactersare also made for the plots to consolidate the relationship between religion and Tengo andAomame, which are filled with violence of which people are both the dispensers andvictims. And at the same time, Haruki Murakami also shows his thought about the newreligion through the scene of Okura Hotel.Murakami keeps on searching for the modern social ethics in his distinctive way, trying to better explain the connotation of the spiritual crisis his Japanese. The image ofUshikawa is a very important and indispensible character which shows the author’s wholeplanning of the novel, and which has the same importance to the topic setting and imageconstructing of the novel.
