With the rapid development of China’s economy and the acceleration of world economicglobalization, the cooperations between China and foreign countries in various fields havereached a historic high level in recent years. Among these frequent cooperations andexchanges, Sino-foreign cooperation in the field of technology and management ofengineering projects is one of the most common and important phenomenon. As the mostcritical part of the contracts of engineering project management, the construction contractdocument, with the functions of construction supervision and the interest protection for bothparties, stipulates the concrete division of labor and other details involved in the project. There is no doubt that the translation of engineering project document is an indispensablework in the foreign related project. However, due to the fact that the source text ofconstruction contract document of engineering project is featured with tremendous quantity ofinformation, complex contents, great professionalism, being purpose-oriented andtime-specific, the traditional source-oriented and linguistic translation theory have been foundinsufficient in guiding the practical translation of construction contract document. This thesis is focused on the translation of construction contract document from theGerman functionalist approach. It consists of six parts:Chapter1points out the need for the study of the translation of construction contractdocument, and presents the research methodology and the research structure of this thesis.Chapter2elaborates the formation and the contents of construction contract document, and reviews the previous studies on contract translation at home and abroad, and thedevelopment of functionalism in translation.Chapter3introduces the key concepts of functionalist theories, emphasizing on theskopostheorie and set up the framework for the present study on construction contractdocument translation.Chapter4discusses the most important three aspects in the applying functionalistapproach to the translation of construction contract document from the study on translationbrief, sources-text analysis, and translation problems identification.Chapter5analyzes the case document in a top-down way from the textual level through syntactic level to lexical level, taking skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule as criteria, and provides the strategies for the specific translations based on intended text functions insuch aspects as text format, term consistency, adverbial clauses of conditions, passive voice, formal words and phrases, archaic words, technical terms, special words, parallel synonymsand modal verbs.Chapter6is the conclusion, which firstly describes the procedures of applyingfunctionalist approach to the translation of construction contract document and concludes thatfunctionalist approach is applicable to the translation of construction contract document.Besides, it is found that the top-down model of analysis is conducive to achieving TTreferential and appellative functions. As for the translation strategies for achieving the twomain functions, apart from the skopos rule at each level, at the textual level, intertextualcoherence should prevail in the rendering of text format, while intratextual coherence shouldpredominate in handering term consistency. At the syntactic level, intratextual coherenceprevails in the translation of adverbial clause of conditions, while intertextual coherence orintratextual coherence could be employed as a flexible use in the translation of passive voice. And at the lexical level, intertextual coherence should have the priority among the allstrategies. In addition, by applying the functionalist approach in CCD of Chomarat, the thesishas broadened the application scope of the functionalist theory itself, and it will be significantfor the guiding of practical translation of construction contract document. The strategies putforward in this thesis could be learned, and the process could be adopted so that workefficiency could be greatly improved.Exemplification is used for studying in this thesis. The author hopes that the thesis canmake some contributions to this field.
