During theperiod of the Anti-Japanese War, intellectuals not only faced crisis of material life, but also faced fierce mental sufferings. Their identities and status have reversed. Theydropped into the bottom of the social life, fell into the spiritual superior. In ZhangHenshui’s novels, we can see a lot of unique local imageries, such as mountains, rain, fog, and teahouse. These imageries in Zhang Henshui’s novels have become a seriesof symbolic signs, and they were also a metaphor for the dark social reality at thattime.Eight years of Chongqing life has produced an important influence on ZhangHenshui’s writing.
