Samul beckett (1906-1989) is a famous modern irish-french novelist anddramatist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in1969. This essay chooseBeckett’s trilogy as reseach target, use Edward W.Soja’s “Third Space†and MichelFoucault’s “power space†as research theroy to analyze “space†in Beckett’s trilogyand the malformed relationship between space and modern people.In introduction, I introduce Beckett’s life and creation, Beckett overseas researchsituation, critical review, the translations and research situation of Beckett’s works inChina, and summarized the reseach results of Beckett’s trilogy. Then I discuss thenecessity of using Edward W.Soja’s “space†theory to analyze Beckett’s trilogy, whichcan help people to understand the meaning of Beckett’s“spaceâ€.The first part,“the dialectical thinking from spatial turn to third spaceâ€. I list thedevelopment of the “space†theory, and analyze Edward W. Soja’s “Third Spaceâ€which under the theory of spatial turn. Then I explain the connotation and relationshipbetween each other.The second part,“sensory and conceived space in Beckett’s trilogyâ€. I useEdward W.Soja’s “First Space†and “Second space†to discuss the shrinking of firstspace and the alienation of characters in Beckett’s trilogy. In this part, I mainlydiscuss three aspects, including the unhealthy relationship between people andmodern social space, the lost of spiritual home which created by characters’ voice andthe changing of “space†which from top area to spiritual area.The third part,“Third Space in Beckett’s trilogyâ€. I use Edward W.Soja’s “ThirdSpace†and Michel Foucault’s “power space†as research theroy to reveals the powerof Beckett trilogy space under the presence and power of space and the chractersthemselves pursue repeat profound and self-imprisonment meaning of the uncannyspace.In summary, I sum up the feasibility of the three spaces and the importantmeaning of “space†in Beckett’s trilogy. |
