Isabel Allende, a female writer from Chile, ushered in the explosionpost-literature era of Latin America with her maiden work The House of the Spirits, which astonishes us with its charming magical hue and striking expressiveness. However, from the view of Latin America literature, it is rather natural to associateThe House of the Spirits with the world-famous One Hundred Years of Solitudecomposed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, since the former is considered to imitate andcatch the latter. So ironically,Isabel Allende has been bearing the reputation of“puton skirt’s Marquez”, which is deemed as the most appealing synonym for IsabelAllende for years in all reports and review on the book’s translation and introduction, without any exception. Worse, even the few domestic research dissertation on herbook never neglect the reference of “put on skirt’s Marquez”. As a result, study onAllende focuses merely on the magical realist aspect, making further theoreticalresearch unnecessary and tedious.Expecting to break the yoke of magical realism, this paper is designed to explorethe narrative art radiated in Allende’s novels comprehensively and thoroughly.Based on reading The House of the Spirits intensively, this paper endeavors to delveinto the fascination of Allende’s narrative art deeply from three aspects respectively.Chapter one analyses how Allende, commencing with female narrative voice, constructed the authority of female narrative by making use of the tactics of narrativevoice. Chapter two analyses how Allende, commencing with the fallibility of malenarrative, destructed the authority of male narrative voice. Applying the spatialnarrative theory, chapter three reveals the ambisexual symbol meaning and discourseconnotation concealed in The House of the Spirits by analyzing it’s spatial narrative. All the analysis above devote to show the unique narrative art of The House of theSpirits and Allende’s consummate narrative craft and composition wisdom.
