Euphemism is an important linguistic phenomenon, existing in various fields in daily life of people all around the world. It is rich in both connotation and external form. Through literature study, induction and deduction, and interdisciplinary analysis, the understanding of Russian euphemism can be furthered.In this study, in consideration of the uniqueness and consistency of euphemism’s definitions given by Chinese, Western and Russian scholars, the limitation of the definitions is analyzed and then the Russian euphemism is classified and researched from the aspects of its range of application, sematic function, and the content of expression. On this basis, the common vocabulary, phrase and sentence structure of Russian euphemism are summarized from synchronic perspective.Russian euphemism is of great significance in communications. It contains plentiful pragmatic functions such as taboo function, concealment function, politeness function, and self-protection function. Studying Russian euphemism from pragmatic perspective can dig into its rich connotation and culture. Through the analyses of pragmatic motivation, the relationship between Russian euphemism and indirect speech act, cooperative principle, politeness principle and social context is pointed out.The combination of pragmatics and functional translation theory provides solid theoretical foundation for this study. Based on translation equivalence, the translation of Russian euphemism should achieve the equivalence of euphemistic coloring, style, emotional coloring, and euphemistic means which are the basic principles of euphemism translation. The core is euphemistic coloring equivalence. The translation strategies of Russian euphemism are further discussed on the principles of translation.This study will not only further the understanding of Chinese and Russian cultures and strengthen national cultural identity, but also help to promote the cross-cultural communication.
