Since the film was born in a cafe on the street of Paris, it has forged a close bond with themetropolis. Chinese film also commenced in the metropolitan, and then gradually became popularby the nourishment of urban culture. This thesis studies the urban films which set in modernmetropolis and show every aspect of the life of urban citizens, as well as their thoughts, affections, desires and other mental activities. When talking about the urban film in the new century, wecannot ignore that a large number of middle-class characters have appeared in the movie. With thedevelopment of urban films, a variety of the middle-class characters are leading the fashion andlifestyle of the whole society with their avant-garde consumption and high taste. This thesis first defines the concept of the middle class from three aspects of occupation, education and property, and then summarizes the images of the middle-class characters in theurban films in the new century by extensively reading of the film text. And it’s revealed that withthe great changes of the social environment in recent years, consumer fields of Chinese middleclass have changes with many new features produced. At the same time, with the changes of socialand cultural context, cultural taste and class identity of the middle class in the new century haveundergone a significant change. The taste of the middle class has a stronger function of classdistinction. In addition, the urban film has greatly affected the middle class identity (includingsocial identity and self-identity). This affects include the way of life, the concept of marriage, career pursuit and so on. In the case of traditional Chinese culture being absent due to the fracture, the western way of life and moral values are spread slowly in middle class daily life and haveshown its subtle influence.Urban films in the new century reflect the psychological state of the middle class and theirlife situation in a unique way and create refreshing middle-class images. Unfortunately, a largenumber of urban films exhibit consumer-centric middle-class cultural images and the movie itselfdoes not care about whether it’s confirming to the reality or not. As a result, these middle-classcharacters are highly exaggerated and ostentatious. However, urban movies are one kind ofexpression of or correspondence with social psychology of transition period. But fundamentallyspeaking, these middle class images which create an illusion and phantom to people have alreadyleft on the big screen. We can’t take it as a real treat, but it will still produce function of misleading to a certain extent without properly control. To solve this problem, analysis of the middle-classimages in urban films in the new century can help us to grasp the development of urban films andclass social from one aspect. This thesis aims to explore the organic interaction between the newurban films and the middle-class images, hoping to benefit the creation of the new century urbanfilms.
