This study intends to offer a clear and thorough summary onecocriticism and explain it from the following three aspects: anthropocentrism, thescientism, and a spectrum of human desire. By analyzing the film from theperspective of the above three facets, the author aims to find how the ecologicalthoughts are inscribed and interwoven with each other in Avatar, which can arousepeople’s ecological consciousness with regard to environmental protection in the faceof global warming. This thesis falls into five chapters. This chapteralso presents an introduction to the basic theory of ecocriticism, the researchquestions and significance. Chapter Two deconstructs Anthropocentrism and suggeststhat even now people think they are the absolute king of the world, but they will getrevenged sooner or later. The relationship between nature and human are partners, thenature is not dominated by human. Chapter Three analyzes the abuse of moderntechnology and weapons in contemporary society and the destructive influences it hascaused to both the earth and the planet Pandora. So as modern science is a double edged sword, people should take it more seriously. Chapter Four points out that incontemporary society, the reason why human are so desperate to pursue wealth is thattheir desire is unbounded. They trade the environment for money and try to conquerother species just to satisfy their own desire. In Chapter Five, after the analysis of therelationship between human and nature in the film, the thesis suggests that thedirector’s portrayal of the hero Jack’s changing attitudes toward men and naturereveals his ecological awareness, which is a result of the influence of his ownexperience and worth to study. In order to explore Cameron’s concern about the urgent situation we are facing inthis modernized world as is revealed in Avatar, the thesis applies the theory ofecocriticism to the analysis of the protagonist Jack’s experience.
