In the age of information globalization, news coverage is no longer confined to domesticcoverage, and focuses more attention to the world, therefore, it is of great importance totranslate the English news into Chinese. The translation report, based on translation of newsreports concerning European Debt Crisis in New York Times, probes the edition and translationwith the theory of translation variation, which is put forward and developed by Chinesescholar Huang Zhonglian. He points out that “translation variation is an activity aimed atderiving the relevant contents of the original by using the appropriate adaptations such asaddition,edition, reporting, condensing, combination and adaptation in the light of the specificdemands of specific readers under specific conditions.” As a comprehensive framework,theory of translation variation contains one of adaptive approaches-edition and translation,which is the specific application and implementation of theory of translation variation. It canbe seen that theory of translation variation takes the demands of target text readers intoconsideration and provides a solid and theoretical support for edition and translation.The author aims at applying theory of the translation variation to the translation practiceof English news, by adopting the methods of editing and translating such as deletion,combination, supplement and restructuring based on discussion of the variation of the news,features and editorials. Editing and translating of news, as a category of non-literarytranslation, is a kind of pragmatic translation with the aim of transmitting message and caringmore about its transmission efficiency, The present translator expects to familiarize herselfwith different text types of English news and master editing and translating strategies thoughthis translation project and improves translation skills by applying theory of the translationvariation to the translation practice, and to offer some insights to the translation practice ofsimilar types of texts.
