China's rapid economic and social development calls for efficient and high-qualitycommunication mechanism. Therefore, it is of great significance to carry out in-depth studyon the Chinese-English translation of news stories to enable the world to better understandChina. This thesis mainly serves this purpose. News story is of unique text style and calls for translation strategies other than those ofliterary works. Various translation theories could be combined to make news story C-Etranslation more efficient. Functional approach, especially the Skopos theory, justifies anytranslation strategy as long as it facilitates certain translation Skopos. The disputes overtranslators' subjectivity open a new field for translators to employ their talents in processingthe original texts. Translation variation theory tries to validate appropriate adaptations such assupplement, deletion, edition, summarization, reduction, combination and remodeling in thelight of the special needs of the readers. With the help of the above-mentioned theories, the author tentatively puts forward acomprehensive translation strategy for news translation from Chinese to English, namelymulti-level translation variation model. Its principle is as follows: bringing into full play thetranslator's subjectivity, make bold but reasonable variations at three levels (lexical, syntactical and contextual) so as to meet the needs of the target readers. Translation variation,as a future trend, will assume a leading role in news translation.
