| With the acceleration of global integration, international communication has become more and more frequent. A great deal of information needs to be conveyed by news media. News transmission becomes a very important way of communication. Online English news, as one of the most important channels for us to know the world, transmits information to people rapidly and effectively in its unique way. In such an information-explosion society, the Internet as a product of the rapid development of modern science and technology has become the fourth main media after newspaper, radio and television. More and more countries attach great importance to the construction of information networks, and regard it as an essential part of the development strategy in the future. The Internet plays an important role in news dissemination. It has the advantages of wide range covering, effectiveness, hypertextuality, large information-capacity and so on. Therefore, online news has unique advantages:strong targetedness, fast reaction and flexible modes and methods of transmission. With the increasing number of Internet users, the number of audiences and contact frequency of traditional media started to decrease, while the number of Internet audiences began to increase significantly. Internet news, as one of the emerging tools of mass communication, becomes increasingly inseparable from human life. The audiences of Internet news hope to get access to the news from abroad in the fastest way. and thus the online news translation has played an irreplaceable role to meet the needs of online news audience. English news translation plays a more and more important role in the cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Therefore, research on online English news translation is of great significance.This thesis attempts to explore the application of edited translation in online English news translation based on the translation variation theory put forward by Professor Huang Zhonglian. The author of this thesis analyzes some specific translation techniques in edited translation. By selecting several pieces of English news from the authoritative English news websites such as China Daily, Financial Times, the Daily Mail, the Reuters. Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and so on and their Chinese versions, the author makes a case study. She analyzes many online English news texts and their translated texts. Through the comparative analysis of the translation texts and the original texts, she proves the necessity of application of edited translation in Internet English news translation. In order to get a better understanding of online English news translation from the perspective of the theory of translation variation, the author reviews the variation theory, and news translation research.The concept of translation variation is totally different from the traditional full translation.In the past, scholars did more research on issues about full translation from the prospective of the original text, but ignored the research of the varied form of translation, which is called as translation variation (non-full translation). So, this new concept of translation lacks systematic research. Thus, the formulation of translation variation theory is a manifestation of the value of partial translation. Huang zhonglian says that the maximum value of translation variation is to internalize the foreign culture. The "internalization" here is not simply the same as full translation of the text but it is aimed to make the extra-territorial culture become part of the target culture. It is difficult for the translator to make an overall absorption of the original which is not necessary. It must undergo some modifications to get the deep understanding of the original texts and make them become part of the target readership. The translation variation theory comes out by the advent of the need of such modifications. From ancient times to now, from China to other countries, there had been many translation variation activities, but not a systematic theory on translation variation could be seen. It is Huang Zhonglian that first puts forward a systematic translation variation theory. The famous translation scholar Professor Huang Zhonglian summarized several kinds of translation variation in his book Studies on Translation Variations based on previous studies on translation variation. They are selective translation, edited translation, translation and report, condensed translation, summarized translation, review, translation and comment, translation and writing, adaptation translation, explanatory translation, reference translation and imitation-translation. The method of edited translation is the most commonly used one except selective translation. Edited translation is also called adaptation which is a process of edition and translation and the former is done first before the latter. Nowadays, edited translation as an important method in the news translation has got the attention of translators and journalists but comprehensive studies of it are relatively inadequate.Then, the thesis discusses the definition of news and the characteristics of the online news, and then after the analysis of some features of the traditional news the author of this thesis analyzes the special characteristics of the online English news: interactivity, effectiveness, unbound space and time, abundance, diversification and hyperlinks. In news translation, the translators as special readers should bring into full play their initiative. On the one hand, they must have a correct understanding of the original texts, which means that the target texts should express the original information to a great extent; on the other hand, translators should pay more attention to the needs of target readers by fully considering Eastern and Western cultures, differences of language, logic and reading habit in order to make the target texts more acceptable, which is the main function of translation variation. By analyzing several adaptation techniques and the characteristics of online news reporting, the author of this thesis believes that it is practicable to apply the theory of translation variation and its adaptation method in online English news translation.This thesis is divided into six parts, including the introduction, literature review, theoretical framework, introduction of online English news translation, case study and conclusion. The first part briefly introduces the object of this study, research background, data collection, the methods used and the overall structure of the thesis. The second part makes a review on the study of news translation and online news translation at home and abroad. The third part introduces the theoretical basis of this study:Translation Variation Theory. The author first introduces the origin, development and the core concepts and eight variants of this theory, and then places importance on the seven principles and five techniques of edited translation. The fourth part discusses some basic features of news and several characteristics of online news. In Part Five case studies of the online English news samples and their Chinese versions are made to prove the effectiveness and necessity of the application of translation variation theory and the adaptation methods in online English news translation. The last part is a summary of the whole thesis in which the author also points out the limitations and inadequacies in the present study and she looks forward to further researches by scholars who are interested in this field. |
