Ever since the implementation of the policy of reform and opening-up to the outside world, especially after China’s accession to World Trade Organization, there has been an increase in commercial and cultural communication between China and other countries around the world. This is well proved by the growing development of foreign tourism in China. The increasingly developing foreign tourism lead to an enlarging demand for tourism translation, while the later can help to introduce Chinese culture and tradition and places of interest to foreign tourists, and what’s more, to promote the development of foreign tourism. However,because of the lingual and cultural differences between Chinese and English and poor translating capacity of some translators, many translated tourism texts in China are of poor quality, and fail to fulfill the purpose of advertising Chinese tourist attractions and introducing Chinese culture to foreign tourists. Therefore, it is significant to improve the quality of translated tourism texts by solving problems caused by lingual and cultural differences between Chinese and English during translating.Skopos theory, one of the most influential translation theories in the world, advocates that the purpose of overall translation action is the prime principle determining the translating process and translating method. Therefore, tourism translating, an action with specific purposes, should be conducted with the application of skopos theory.Based on the writer’s own translation practice, this paper makes a rudimentary study of applying skopos theory to solve problems in translating tourism texts. The paper consists of five chapters:the first chapter is the preamble of the paper, in the second chapter, the paper makes a brief analysis of the original tourism text by introducing its content and text features; then, in the third chapter, it provides an introduction of major perspectives of skopos theory, and elaborates the importance and necessity of applying skopos theory in tourism translating; in the fourth chapter, on the basis of the translation of a tourism text about Huangshan Mount, some examples are cited to prove that according to skopos theory, original texts can be adjusted and modified in tourism translating to achieve desired purposes, and in this way, translating problems caused by lingual and cultural differences between Chinese and English can be solved; finally, the fifth chapter makes a conclusion about the paper, emphasizing that skopos theory should be used in tourism translation to slove translating problems.
