Howard Goldblatt’s Translation Of Honggaoliang Jiazu: Criticism Based On Manipulation Theory

In this thesis, the author aims to take Lefevere s Manipulation Theory as thetheoretical foundation and analyze the manipulation phenomena in Red Sorghum: ANovel of China from three perspectives: ideology, poetics and patronage. In theanalyzing process, aspects influenced by ideology include politics and religion,aspects influenced by poetics include number, name, verb and proper noun, andaspects influenced by patronage include adage and culture-loaded word.Meanwhile, the author collects40manipulation cases through the comparativestudy between the original work and the translated version and systematicallyanalyzes them within the framework of Manipulation Theory in a qualitative manner.On the basis of case study, the author finds that Mo used many culture-relatedexpressions in Honggaoliang Jiazu and these expressions were manipulated most byGoldblatt, because they would usually cause readers misunderstanding. Meanwhile,Goldblatt adopted many translation strategies to realize the manipulation, such assubstitution, omission, addition, deletion and conversion, and these strategies enabledthe target text to conform to the target ideology and poetics as well as live up to thepatronage s requirements. The author also finds Going Global of Chinese Culturecould draw on experience from and come alive through Going Global of ChineseLiterature, so he raises some suggestions for introducing the Chinese literature tothe world: to cultivate and employ translators who understand both languages andcultures, to cooperate with major publishers that value books quality, to show specialattention for culture-related expressions and to adopt necessary translation strategies.At last, the author offers some advice for future research: to choose culture-enrichedliterary works, to examine literary works translators and publishers and to put theresearch in the grand background of Going Global of Chinese Culture.
