Jia Pingwa is a great star in modern and contemporary Chinese literary world. His works are full of rebellious and innovative spirit.Feidu is a novel written by Jia Pingwa in 1990 s.The book was banned in China for 16 years, but won a reputation in foreign countries. In 1997,the novel won the prestigious Prix Femina award for best foreign novel.More than 20 years later after its first edition, the English version of Feidu was published and translated by Howard Goldblatt,a famous Sinologist. As one of the first writers to go abroad,he has attracted the attention of the foreign literary circle, and his works have won some awards abroad.Nonetheless, the dissemination and translation of his works in western countries are relatively insufficient.Based on Lefevere's manipulation theory, this thesis analyzes the English version of Feidu from three aspects: ideology, poetics and patronage.Through the research, this thesis concludes that, the manipulation of ideology on Howard Goldblatt's translation lies in that the mainstream ideology in the West has an impact on the political language and sexual description in this translation,Goldblatt consciously rewrite the original text to a certain extent when translating. He tries to streamline, substitute and omit politically sensitive information and political expressions with Chinese characteristics,so as to consistent with western mainstream ideology and values,to improve the validity of information conveyance and the acceptability for receptors. The manipulation of poetics on translation manifests that:poetics can exert influence on the translation of classical Chinese and dialects. In the translation process,Goldblatt pays attention to the reading experience of Western readers, and tends to adopt paraphrase and omission on the basis of free translation. The manipulation of patronage factors on translation is reflected in the text selection, publication, acceptance and communication effects.Patronages of different natures are crucial to the spread of the work abroad. On the basis of the analysis of the English translation of Feidu, this thesis points out that full consideration should begiven to the literary translation studies from the perspective of culture, and more attention should be paid to improve domestic publishing mechanism and literary agent system. In this way,Chinese literature could keep up with the international book market and expand the sight of foreign readers.
