Confinement and Postponement of the Consummation of Modern Women·sSelf by Subordination: A Comparative Study of Runaway and FemalePsychologistμ involves two texts of two women writers, Runaway and FemalePsychologist. Runaway is the collection of short stories written by Canada·soutstanding female writer Alice Munro. Female Psychologist is written by thefamous Chinese female writer Bi Shumin. The aspects of contrast between Runaway and Female Psychologist are time, objects, events, results and causes. First, the two texts are both concerned aboutthe time span since World War II. Secondly, the main characters of the two textsare ordinary women, and the thesis analyzes the depiction of their marriage, family, love and work. In the two books, Crisis emerges in the lives of women. Facingcrisis women in Runaway choose to escape, while women in Female Psychologistare at the edge of a nervous breakdown, but they do not choose to run away, instead they seek the help of psychologists and try to defuse the crisis. Althoughthe solutions are different, be it runaway or consulting a psychologist, trying tochange and seeking happiness are those women·s fundamental purpose. Finally, the root causes of females· crises are similar, which are related to the females·collective unconsciousness. Through the comparison of the two texts, it is obviousthat both Canadian women and Chinese women are living in a patriarchal society, and they inevitably suffer from the erosion of the subordination. Despite thetwo-century feminist movement and the subsequent improvement of women·sstatus, women·s fight for equality still has a long way to go. This thesis discussesthe impact of subordination on the collective unconsciousness, and as well as theintangible influence of the changed collective unconsciousness on the way of modern women·s life. This thesis, using Carl Jung·s theory of the collective unconsciousnessanalyzes Alice Munro·s Runaway and Bi Shumin·s Female Psychologist. By thecomparison of them, the collective unconsciousness of the modern woman shownin these books is explored. Throughout the survival of women in the patriarchalsociety, after the patriarchal clan replaced the matriarchal clan, women are trappedin a subordinate position, which shows that subordination in the collectiveunconsciousness of women has far-reaching historical accumulation.Subordination can be divided into four aspects, including inertia, dependency, servility and inferiority. Female collective unconsciousness is composed ofarchetypes, and there are four main archetypes in female collectiveunconsciousness: animus, shadow, persona and self. Inertia leads to the activestate of animus. Dependency deepens the shadow in female mentality. Servilityshackles persona. Inferiority delays women·s self consummation. The works ofMunro and Bi both touch the subordination of women. Runaway demonstrates thatthe tendency of Canadian women to solve the problem is escapeμ, based on thefemale collective unconsciousness, while Female Psychologist shows that Chinesewomen·s tendency is changeμ. This difference stems from the differences incollective unconsciousness of modern women, because of the different modernhistorical context. In this thesis by comparison of the two books female about women·s survivalstatus, this research explores the impact of subordination on female collectiveunconsciousness and the impact of the changed collective unconsciousnessinfluenced by subordination on the lifestyle of modern women. Due to thedifferences in cultural background and the recent history of Canada and China, thefemale collective unconsciousness has the regional characteristics, so the critical study of the female survival status in the two countries will provide a differentdirection in the exploration of females· development and future, which haspositive significance and research value.
