After graduation, only a few of the graduates of interpreting major becomeinterpreters. So some people regard it useless to join MTI program. Some scholars,however, insist that some competences of interpreting can also be applied innon-interpreting sectors. Since encyclopedic knowledge plays an indispensable role ininterpreting, the author conducts a research on the application of encyclopedicknowledge in the workplace.The author circulates questionnaires to nineteen interpreting major graduates of2012of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. After data collection and analysis,the author finds that there is difference between encyclopedic knowledge learned inMTI program and encyclopedic knowledge applied in the workplace. Neither thebreadth nor the depth of encyclopedic knowledge meets the standard of the workplace.Therefore, the author makes some suggestions on entrance examination, syllabus,employers and students’ study, hoping that this will be beneficial to preparing MTIstudents for their future jobs. |
