College English teachers, as a large group in China, have some differences withprofessional English teachers in entry qualifications, educational background, theobject of teaching, academic environment and research experience etc., while theyundertake the same important task of English teaching reform in China. Therefore, thedevelopment of college English teachers plays a dominant role in college Englishteaching reform.In early1980s, a large number of theories on teachers’ professional developmentwere put into practice and application, one of which is peer coaching, an effectiveway to promote teachers’ professional development. However, the researchers in theprevious study are more concerned about peer coaching in Middle Schools rarelyinvolved in College English Teaching.This study investigates35college English teachers to prove the role of peercoaching in college English teachers’ professional development, makes full use ofadvantages of Chinese teaching group so as to improve the effectiveness of teachers’cooperation and promote teachers’ professional development.The results show that: peer coaching is an effective way to promote collegeEnglish teachers’ professional development, which is beneficial for improvingteachers’ teaching ability and strengthening collaboration and reflection amongteachers.
