On Zero Translation From The Perspective Of Descriptive Translation Studies

Since China’s reform and opening up, there are frequent communicationsbetween different countries. It also happens in translation world. Western words andcultures are now more familiar to common people. We can see zero translation wordssuch as "DVD","MP3" and so on appearing in our daily life everywhere. Thoughpeople hold different opinions on this phenomenon, we have to admit that it is a trendfor the future translation. Thus, in the paper, the author agrees with the name "zerotranslation" initiated by Professor Qiu Maoru.Since zero translation is a new phenomenon in China, the author finds theoreticalsupport for this phenomenon, which is Descriptive Translation Studies theory initiatedby Gideon Toury. In his theory, Toury stresses the important of descriptive translationstudies, proposes TL-oriented research methods and proposes translation norms.Considering all the norms he provided, the author finds there is still something it lacksof, thus translators’ subjectivity is added to. With all these consideration, the authorprovides solid theoretical ground for zero translation phenomenons. In the practicepart, under the guidance of descriptive translation studies, the author comes up withtwo parts of skills and each part has their own specific skills.However, as a new phenomenon, zero translation can not be applied toeverywhere, which means it has its own application area. Under the guidance oftranslators’ subjectivity, within the protection of proper usage, zero translation canserve as a new and excellent method to solve specific translation problems.
