Constructing The "Third Space" In Hybrid

As a pioneer of overseas students, Yung Wing experienced the cultural identity dilemmaof “marginal people”: from the differences and conflicts of the two cultures, to the culturalhybrid and fusion, to achieve the cultural harmony and construct the " third space "successfully. As an outstanding representative of “marginal people”, Yung Wing’s patrioticambition was to make China prosperous by teaching western thoughts, therefore, he devotedhis rest life to putting forward his idea. The identity of “marginal people” added an enormousobstacle to his plan, nevertheless, his broad perspective provided a larger stage for his career.This paper tries to analyze the cultural identity of Yung Wing with Homi Bhabha’s "Hybridity " and the " Third Space " theory, meanwhile, it argues the “third space” that heconstructed for the modern Chinese education from the perspective of post-colonial studies.“Hybridity” theory is the condition and basis of the “Third Space” theory. We can not build a“third space” and find a solution without “hybridity”.Part I is Introduction. This part includes the introductions of Yung Wing, his work MyLife in China and America, the literature review and the research significance. Part II is thebody part of the paper. Firstly, the second chapter includes the introduction of Homi Bhabha’s"Hybridity" and the “Third Space" theories, meanwhile, it also introduces post-colonialcondition in some other Chinese-Americans’ works. In the third chapter, the paper discussesthe difficulties Yung Wing met in process of achieving cultural harmony. The fourth chapterdescribes strategies that Yung Wing took in constructing the " Third Space ". The last part isconclusion.
