The painting space is considered as artists’ dynamic and subjective cognition of nature,which is the process of artists expressing their ideal world that conveys the objectivemorphology of nature and the essence of artists’ themes and their aesthetic. Chinesetraditional meticulous figure painting is famous of its aesthetic value, in the world, whichowns a long history. There exists significant differences between Chinese traditionalmeticulous figure painting methods, which is compared to that of western’s figure painting.Western figure painting utilizes focus perspective for conveying three-dimensional space.However, Chinese traditional meticulous figure painting adopts the cavalier perspectivepainting method to conveying planar space, which aims for expressing the entire andmacro natural objects. Furthermore, Chinese traditional meticulous figure painting isdetached from the passive representation of object space; and it pursues to express thefollowing painting spaces which are the compatibility between human being and natureand the unity between human being and nature, in order to convey painters’ concern on theuniversal life and painters’ inner emotion world.This dissertation utilizes case study analysis method for discussing the characteristicsof traditional figure painting space and <<Buckingham Chunxiao diagram>> is utilized asthe case for analysis. The first chapter provides the definition of painting space and itsexpression method. The second chapter illustrates the traditional figure painting space’scharacteristics through the following specifics: the fluidity of picture, overlapping relation,the contrast of reality and fantasy, the opposition and unification of spatial organizationand the construction of Jiehua. The third chapter provides the thought basis of traditionalfigure painting’s spatial theory, which are the ‘Harmony between Human being andNature’,‘Small by Near and Big in the Distance’,‘Spirit-giving Theory’,‘ImageTheory’and the influence of Chinese character art on Chinese traditional figure painting;and then discusses that it is the necessary tendency of establishment of traditional figurepainting space expression form. The final part concludes that the traditional figure painting spatial expression form is based on systematic philosophy theory, which is meaning forcontemporary figure painting, especially with its specific expression method.Chinese traditional meticulous figure painting has significant influence on thecontemporary figure painting, especially with its characteristics of fluidity, rhythmizationand multiple viewpoints of spatial theory, which can be utilized for mediating thedifferences between the Chinese painting languages and those of the western, furthermorethat makes it easier for painters to express their inner emotional world, and then it is usedfor transmitting the consciousness of Chinese painting space and makes the language ofcontemporary painting spatial expression more charming.
