Lu Xun, a great writer and thinker, is well-known for his works, which not onlyhave been widely recognized by Chinese readers but also have influenced overseas. So,research on Lu Xun has become a popular trend in domestic literature and academiagradually since his death in1936.Being the most representative and influential Chinese literatus in20th century, LuXun also has an unique vision of art and his contribution to the development of Chinesemodern art is not inferior to that he has made in literary world. However, the extremelysplendid part of his life is ignored because of his prominent achievements in literature.Throughout his life, Lu Xun showed extraordinary interest and attention on art, forinstance, in the teenage years, Lu Xun had a particular preference for drawing. When hestudied in Japan, he appealed for social value and function of art enthusiastically. At hismiddle age, Lu Xun was engaged in portrait of stone carving, comic books andillustration for novels. And he also did research and promoting on chinese and foreignart. In his later years, Lu Xun advocated Chinese emerging woodcut, actively heldexhibitions, organized sessions about woodcut and edited woodcut picture albums, etc.It is titled Lu Xun and Art in this paper. In this paper, the affinity between Lu Xunand art is studied, his artistic views is inquired about and his contribution to thedevelopment of Chinese modern art is evaluated, according to the limited data. Thepaper is divided into five parts. The first part narrated Lu Xun’s art complex throughouthis life. It mainly described the emotional origin between Lu Xun and art, what’s more,the art activities he took part in were aslo described. The second third part discussed LuXun’s understanding of Chinese and foreign art. It analysed his understanding ofChinese-foreign traditional art and modern art, as well as the social value and functionthat exist in new types of art, such as Chinese modern print, cartoon, comic book and soon in detail. The fourth part talked about Lu Xun’s artistic ideas and view. In concertwith Lu Xun’s literary creation and his unique version of art’s function,it described LuXun’s artistic ideas and view. The fifth part showed Lu Xun’s contribution to thedevelopment of Chinese modern art. In this part, it majorly talked about how Lu Xun ledthe trend of both the methods and the spirit of Chinese modern art, especially hisimportant contribution to the innovation of Chinese modern print.
