The “17-year Period” of New China plays an important part in the evolution ofTraditional Chinese Painting in the20thcentury; it inherits the historical trends ofTraditional Chinese Painting innovation since the20thcentury, while being steeped inthe political climate of that special era. Ink Wash Portrait Painting has seen enormousadvancement during this Traditional Chinese Painting evolvement called “NeoLiterati Painting Movement”, Realistic Ink Wash Portrait Painting emerges andthrives, it becomes the greatest success of Ink Wash Portrait creation of that era, dueto the involvement of “Chinese-Western Fusion” methodology in TraditionalChinese Painting innovation, the Pen and Ink sensation founded by profound InkWash tradition, and the demands for plunging into the thick of life, reflecting modernpeople and modern things.Throughout the course of Chinese Portrait Painting evolution, productivityalways ebbs and flows with political tides, which was significantly so in the17-yearperiod. Therefore, in order to study the flourishing of Ink Wash Portrait Paintingduring this period, not only we need to consider the evolvement process of bothpreservation and innovation of Traditional Chinese Painting brushwork andcomposition, but also to inspect various factors including characteristics of the era andpolitical appeal, so that an unbiased and comprehensive evaluation can be concluded.This research looks at works of Ink Wash Portrait Painting during the17-yearperiod, in particular, the study of the brushwork innovation and composition style,based on the general features of such works in this era. This research draws uponliterature study, Sociology study, Iconography study and individual case study etc., weplace the study of brushwork innovation and composition style of Realistic Ink WashPortrait Paintings into the axis of20thcentury Chinese Evolution, in conjunction ofthe special political and cultural background of17-year period; this research exploresthe cause and state of transmutation with brushwork and composition styles in PortraitPaintings during the17-year period; it discusses in deep analysis of exploration into creation and manifestation patterns, and formation of brushwork innovation andcomposition styles; it also elaborates the causes and state of prosperity of RealisticInk Wash Portrait Painting, as well as its achievements, limitations and influence todate on Portrait Painting. Furthermore, it evaluates in full scale the impact andimportance of Ink Wash Portrait Painting during the17-year period within the courseof Portrait Painting evolution in20thcentury to generations to come, in hope to build acertain foundation for Realistic Ink Wash Portrait Painting research in general.
